I found with our 64 we put in a replacement CVR a long time ago that was made by Standard Motor Products. At the full stop, after the key has been on a more than 5 seconds, the gauge should read full. You should not have to seperately ground the sender to make the gauge work. jjsharp said: If it is the same as a 1965, and I assume it is, the filler tube stabs into the tank, and there is an oring. If the gauge only works with a seperate ground attached then there is a problem with the body ground wire for the sender. Why does the new sending unit work when the resistance at the upper stop is about twice the resistance it is supposed to be?Couple things. The previous posts called for about 5 ohms at the top and 78 ohms at the bottom. This resulted in 10.5 ohms when the float is at the top stop and 78 ohms at the bottom stop. However, after searching some of the previous fuel gauge sending unit posts, I decided to check the resistance. So no problem right? Just put in the new sending unit and I'm done. The gauge gradually goes to empty as I move the float down to the lower stop. After moving the float on the new sending unit all the way to the top the fuel gauge sits right on full. Dagelh - Still working on this! I got a new sending unit from Mac's, unplugged my old sending unit and plugged in my new one with it grounded out as per the test procedure in the shop manual.
